You might not have met Flavio, but if you love the North Trails, he touched your life. Over the years, Flavio helped build some of the most beautiful trails in the system, including Punta Gorda, El Jalito (now Flavio), Las Palmas, and Las Minitas, as well as multiple connector trails. He also spent countless hours over the years—from 2009 until last year as his health declined—doing seasonal maintenance, repairing washouts, and improving the trails.

Flavio carried a passion for trails his entire life. Flavio’s son, Nonato, said through an interpreter, that Flavio started going on the trails when he was a kid to hunt, collect cows, and gather honey. He had fond memories of walking with his family on the Punta Gorda trail all the way to Las Cruces and back. He also particularly enjoyed the Las Minitas and Las Palmas trails, Nonato said. He liked to visit Las Minitas early in the morning because he would see a lot of deer. He loved to support trail races and often staffed the relief station at Las Palmas. Las Palmas, Nonato said, was particularly difficult to build because he and Flavio did the work alone and there were big rocks to move.

John Ecker, longtime El Jalito resident and original pioneer of the North Trails—met Flavio in 2009 when he hired him as caretaker for his property. John had started carving out biking trails (starting with John’s Java), and Flavio joined the effort in John’s employ.
“That guy was so strong,” John said. “When we would go work on the trails, he would hike up there. He had a short cut right up the mountain. I’d ride my bike and he’d be there before me."
John said Flavio would keep working long after he himself quit for the day with barely enough energy to ride back down the hill.
“I like people who work and who are not afraid to work. That impresses me and I think that is why Flavio and I clicked,” John said.
John agrees that Flavio’s passion for the trails included his family. John says he and Flavio mapped out a plan for Punta Gorda one May and his family joined him the work that season.
“They had the whole family there that summer—the dogs and the kids, everybody.”
