Juniper Mountain Road is a great connector from Alpine Meadows to Squaw Valley. It connects to the top of some fun Squaw Valley singletrack (WST, and the Squaw Valley trails). We usually ride this on our gravel/cross bikes when jumping from valley to valley and avoiding the pavement. Not a destination trail if you like feature rich singletrack, but a great connector. It's been closed to vehicle traffic for many years. Easy climb. This area is used by equestrians as well, so watch for them, stop, say hi.
For a truly epic gravel adventure, you can completely avoid the highway from Ward Canyon all the way to Squaw by riding up the Sherwood Road to Weasel road. This is best ridden from south to north (totally rideable on a well geared gravel/cross/xc bike in this direction). For an extra epic adventure, do the 1/2 mile hike-a-bike to the Top of Ward Peak and ride down. Gorgeous views of the Sierra Crest.
For the bikepacking/adventure crowd, this can be part of a route to ride minimal pavement along the west shore. Combine with Stanford Rock/TRT, and Barker Pass/Ellis Peak/Sunrise for an epic backcountry adventure.
