Kid Peak to Shallow Creek Loop- use the purple line on the map above.
Some riders like parking at the junction of Miner’s Creek Road and Hwy 149 and begin with a 4 1/2 mile ride up the highway to the entrance to Kid Peak Estates. Or you can park a car here and shuttle up the highway.
Travel southwest on Hwy 149 from Creede to the 28.8 mile mark and turn right into Kid Peak Estates. If you miss the first road into the subdivision, there is a second one that goes to the same place about 1/4 of a mile farther up the highway.
Proceed up the road through the development to the Forest Service gate (.4 miles)
Once through the gate, the dirt road proceeds up hill and forks in a meadow. Take the right-hand fork and proceed uphill. The next quarter mile or so is a very steep climb and for most of us, a hike-a-bike section. But once on top of the crest, at .8 miles from entering Kid Peak Estates, take the right-hand fork once more. Proceed on the rolling double track across the “bench” of land in an easterly direction. You will find another short push at 1.04 miles. As soon as you top this, bear right down the ridge and look for the track. In the middle of June, this track can be almost hidden by flowering Lupine and grasses. This rolling track is a pure delight. There area few climbs and all are capable of being ridden by most riders.
1.96 mi. Small creek crossing
2.16 mi. you will encounter another gate just past a small water crossing
3.14 Important fork– bear right on a faint trail. (The left hand track climbs up to Dear Park– quite steep but beautiful.)
3.94 Scenic overlook above the Rio Grande and cliffs behind Antlers Guest Ranch. Spectacular view of the river from the top of the cliffs. Great break and snack spot.
4.4 miles you intersect an old road coming out of Broadacres Guest Ranch. Do not go down this, but instead turn left across the mesa. You will need to ride cross-country without much of a trail here, though you might find a vague cattle path. You will aim for the conifers on the top of the slope out of Shallow Creek– specifically look for a “triple-trunk tree” that marks the gate in the fence. While doing this and riding across the bench, look for a fence line and once at the corner, you can follow the fence line to this triple tree and the gate. This challenging trial will drop into Shallow Creek.
Once at the bottom of the trail, go upstream a hundred yards or so and look for a hiking trail on your right that meanders through the willows. There is a good bridge if you find the right trail. Cross the bridge and you will soon be on Shallow Creek Access road, and it is about 2 miles to Miner’s Creek Road, and a little under 2 miles back to the junction of highway 149.
This is one of my favorite rides in the area as it does not include a tremendous amount of climbing (other than that hike out of Kid Peak). Total ride time might vary, but somewhere between 2-3 hours can be expected. My loop from the house takes about 2 1/2 hours, but a stop on the river overlook, or an exploration up to Deer Park can add a few more.
