This trail climbs around 3700' from the Blackmore trailhead in Hyalite canyon (alternately accessed from the reservoir) to the summit Mt. Blackmore, and is generally ridden as an out-and-back. It sees a wide variety of trail types along the way, including alpine singletrack, loose rock, lengthy rock gardens, off-camber roots and smooth forest sections. Expect significant sections of hike-a-bike on the way up. Trail junctions near the start are well-signed. Once the saddle between Elephant Mtn and Blackmore is reached, stay right up the ridge to gain Blackmore proper. Riding straight here will drop the rider into South Cottonwood, which is an adventurous ride and can be ridden as a long shuttle.
The descent is rowdy, rocky and fun, but keep in mind that this is a popular recreation spot close to Bozeman. Expect to share the trail with hikers and horses, be courteous, and yield the trail. Best ridden on a weekday.
