Despite it's moderate length, Pointy Knob is a proper Canaan Valley backcountry trail. If you are mountain biking, it is highly recommended to start at the eastern trailhead and ride clockwise to the western trailhead. The trail begins with climb up technical singletrack to it's highest point approximately 2 miles in, this section tends be fairly overgrown with rhododendron. For the first mile or so the trail travels in and out of deep swamps that can not be circumnavigated, so plan to travel slowly and get wet feet. As you near the high point however, the trail quality improves drastically. The final 3 miles descends gradually through enjoyable and technical rocks and roots. Approximately 1.5 miles from the bottom you will pass the Pointy Knob shelter on your right and you will begin hearing Red Run creek which you will soon cross 3 times before reaching Canaan Loop Road at the western trailhead. This trail is fairly well marked but does not receive much traffic so can be a little hard to follow at times. It is best done in periods of dry weather.
