River Run is a fun, multi-dimensional trail running along the West Branch of the Passumpsic River, at the bottom of the Westside of Darling Hill. The trail transitions from a fast, smooth, narrow gravel path in the north to a (sometimes wide) fast and flowy singletrack in the south.

The northern half of the trail is generally smooth and hard-packed, with no significant technical features or obstacles, gradual elevation changes (except for a steep climb at the far-northern end) and suitable for all skills levels. In the south, after Burrington Bench, the trail becomes a bit more technical with a few sneaky twists, turns and punchy elevation changes, interspersed with a mild dose of rocks, roots and gentle rough, punctuated by unexpected, creative, long and narrow bridgework..

Most of the trails that traverse the Westside slope of Darling Hill end on River Run.

There are many ways to get from River Run back up to the top of Darling Hill. At the steep northern end you can just climb out on River Run itself. About halfway down River Run you can use the awesome Burrington Bench climbing trail with its iconic switchbacks, or further south, you can either return on Fox Run back to Bemis, or use any of the several trails that climbs up towards the Market Café area in the south. These include Meadow Wood, Violet's Outback, West Branch and West Bench, or Hog Back and Piggy Back.

Access Info

Most of the iconic trails that start at top of Darling Hill at its northern end, as well as on Bemis along the edge of the ridge, spills out on River Run at the bottom. If you continue south on River Run, you will eventually get to the great trails at the southern end of Darling Hill, including Violet’s Outback, West Branch, West Bench, Sidewinder, Piggy Back, Hog Back and Bear Back.
