This scenic 2-mile loop delivers an impressive amount of variety in a compact distance. While bicycles are permitted, most users will find that the trail is better suited to hiking due to its steep grades, narrow tread, and technical sections. Hikers will find it somewhat challenging with generally secure footing, and the loop can be travelled in either direction.

Mountain Bikers up for the challenge can access the top of the trail via Sawmill-Dry Rd, and will be rewarded with tight, technical descent with moderately high consequences for error. Be aware that the top of Upper Sawmill Gulch Trail is not signposted and can be difficult to find without GPS.

Clockwise around the loop is the preferred direction for most users. This orientation puts the bulk of the climbing under tree cover and saves the most scenic ridge and cliff sections for the latter half of the loop. Riders who choose to bike the trail will also find clockwise to be the most logical flow.

From the trailhead, the route begins as an old doubletrack climbing gradually up Sawmill Gulch — a narrow, glacially formed valley with a small stream and consistent tree cover. Expect sustained climbing here, and for cyclists, some hike-a-bike is likely.

At approximately 0.5 miles, turn right at the signpost toward the “Viewpoint.” After crossing the river, the character of the trail changes dramatically as it narrows into singletrack and begins traversing a grassy ridgeline. The trail soon arrives at a dramatic cliff-top overlook with expansive views of the valley, river, and surrounding mountains.

The ridge continues past several rock outcroppings with intermittent panoramic views before the trail begins descending the far side of the hill. It eventually reenters the forest and contours along a steep, side-hill slope with consistent glimpses of the river below.

For mountain bikers, this final traverse is the most technical portion of the loop — narrow, semi-exposed in places, and demanding precise line choice — but also the most rewarding for skilled riders. The descent ultimately reconnects near the trailhead, completing the loop.
