Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (BUMP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit mountain-bike organization dedicated to building, maintaining, preserving, and riding mountain-bike trails in Birmingham and the surrounding areas of central Alabama. Founded in 1994, BUMP has played a major role in establishing and sustaining the Birmingham region as one of the Southeast's significant mountain-bike destinations. The organization is driven by volunteers and works in partnership with land managers, government agencies, trail builders, businesses, and other community organizations to develop and maintain high-quality, sustainable trails and expand opportunities for mountain biking.
BUMP's trail stewardship encompasses several important riding areas in the Birmingham region, including Oak Mountain State Park, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, and Trussville City Park. At Oak Mountain, Alabama's largest state park, BUMP has been responsible for decades of trail development, maintenance, reroutes, and new construction, helping create a diverse network ranging from traditional hand-built singletrack to modern flow trails, technical descents, and advanced mountain-bike terrain. The organization continues to work with Alabama State Parks and other partners on major trail-development projects and improvements throughout the region.
Tannehill Ironworks is another major focus of BUMP's trail work. The organization maintains and develops the mountain-bike trail network within the historic state park and is undertaking a substantial expansion of the trail system. BUMP is also developing adaptive-accessible mountain-bike opportunities at Tannehill in partnership with organizations including Catalyst Sports and the Lakeshore Foundation, with the goal of creating one of the Southeast's largest adaptive mountain-bike trail systems.
Beyond trail construction and maintenance, BUMP promotes mountain biking through organized rides, events, clinics, volunteer trail-work days, advocacy, and community programs. Its programming includes initiatives supporting women, veterans, and adaptive riders, reflecting an emphasis on making mountain biking more accessible and welcoming to a broader range of participants.
BUMP's work is fundamentally community-driven. Volunteers have built and maintained trails, organized events, raised funds, supported trail advocacy, and worked directly with land managers to expand the region's mountain-bike infrastructure. The organization continues to pursue new trail projects and partnerships while maintaining the existing systems that have made Birmingham and central Alabama a destination for mountain bikers.
Whether riding, volunteering, donating, or participating in BUMP events, members and supporters contribute directly to the organization's mission of building better trails and a stronger mountain-bike community throughout the Birmingham region.
