Trail Bottom Out
For an Intermediate/Advanced rider that likes to challenge myself- this trail was stupid. You need expert skills to ride this trail especially the South end in the wash. Once you come out of the wash it gets better, but a steep climb back to outer limits. One word to describe the wash is “annoying” There is absolutely no flow unless you are Superman on a bike.

What a gas!! Really a fun trail—Some sections really challenge one to connect the dots—nothing that can’t be walked as one grows into it tho. Kudos to the builder!

Fun and varied spicy blue trail. It’s a great progression trail for building tech climb and descent skills for intermediate bikers. Enjoyed riding the tech ups as practice for the other black trails in the area.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I’d consider this a black trail. I’m an intermediate rider and there were about 4 or 5 areas I couldn’t clear. Add in some tough uphill rock garden climbs, narrow twisty turns thru trees and slickrock exposure makes this, IMO, a black. Nearby blues, Aerie, Cockscomb, etc are much easier.

Beautiful trail with amazing views. I don't agree with the blue rating, either this needs to be black or Aerie, Cockscomb, Rupp, Girdner, Chuckwagon need to be green because there's a very clear jump in difficulty. Quite a bit of technical climbing and exposure.

Super fun! First time trying it was 18 miles into a westsiiiide XC ride with 15-20 mph winds (extra spicy!), very similar to Hogwash in difficulty, the janky rock rolls on the south end are not as bad as they look.

Super fun mix of flow, tech, and exposure. Rode southbound; north end is flowy with one notable climb (not too bad, nice rest spot at the top near some boulders), and a little more flow after. Once dropping down to the wash, gets narrow and techy (probably one of the harder sections of blue in the area), then a nice climb back towards the trailhead. After the initial bit out of the wash it becomes a reasonable grade, much less exhausting compared to the climb up Girdner to the TH.

Also super-fun and extra challenging if ridden the “wrong” direction, which would be North to South. I’d suggest doing it as an out and back going Sputh to North first so that you can size up the trail, then turning around and being familiar with what you’re in for when you go back the “wrong” way.

This trail is only worth riding for the aesthetics. The trail is an intermediate (at best) and marked as such by the signs around the route. There are a few short punchy climbs but otherwise it’s unremarkable. Unless you are looking to take an inexperienced rider on a visually appealing trail, its not worth it.

I tried to avoid this trail because someone said it was really crappy in the reviews above. But it was actually really fun. And I think the trail is great. Yes, it’s rocky. But 90% of the trails around here are rocky. This was a great trail.

Underrated trail that takes a couple runs to warm up to and find the flow. But once you have scouted the sections, and can ride aggressively, is so fun! Great for working on tech skills and sessioning features. This trail is genius.

Amazing trail, it has broken in so well. The climb is one of my favorites in Sedona. The downhill has easier and harder options, both fun in their own ways. Awesome views at the top and overall one of my fav trails now.

Should have read the comments closer. Do not expect technical ledges, or drops. If you’re into flow then this is for you. Found this incredibly boring and my antithesis of a trail... a waste of time compared to other loops in Sedona.

Rode this one a couple weeks ago just to get to Outer Limit from the cultural center trailhead. Was quite boring to be honest. A lot of climbing but was expected of course. Just not very interesting. I guess next time I’ll try another trail to get me to Outer Limit, as that is one is my favorite trail for sure - just awesome!

Spectular views all the way to the top from the northside...some definite, short HAB sections that switchback into loose, chute-like, sketchy sections on the southside that experts will enjoy and are at least walkable to the rest of us. In general, lots of exposure on a bench cut... overall tight singletrack with punchy ups and downs that demand attention, generates the expected adrenaline rush, and delivers the "Sedona euphoria" that defines a "thrill skeekers delight" paired with reasonable risk most will relish✌️

Fun, but probably more intermediate than advanced. The steepest sections of outer limits or the exposed parts of ledge-and-airy are much more difficult.

Very comparable to outer limits, but a bit shorter.

First ride today. Pretty fun but definitely not a black diamond unless these something gnarley I the first 0.5 mile, which I didn’t ride. I pretty easily cleared the whole trail. Similar in style and difficulty to Girdner. Pretty steady climb out if you ride it north to south. I rode Girdner up and cut across at the new Rover trail (completed today) which cut out some of the climb out. Fun trail if you are already riding in the area, not one that I would personally seek out.

Rode yesterday with four other experienced Sedona riders and only one cleaned it. Riding from the north it's basically a great bench cut down the West Fork of Dry Creek with narrow tricky turns. Cross Girdner and climb around the top of Tim`s Wash then either way to the Cultural Park or Color Cove which leads to Dry Creek road.

Creative design that allows experts a chance to do their thing and rendezvous with everyone else on Outer Limits. Gorgeous views even by Sedona standards. Technically I would rate it lower than the three H`s and above Last Frontier.

The Girdner - Rupp - Outer limits loop is great fun. Well built, good flow and really nice views of the other side of Sedona. Did this at the tail end of a 45 mile day that included Hangover, Hogs, and Hiline, and it was a great finish. I wasn't expecting the flow, the quality, and the views.

I think this is one of the most beautiful and unique trails in Sedona. It runs along the base of Mescal Mountain and a good portion of it is on red slickrock. There are some techy sections, but they're easily walkable if you don't feel comfortable. Really great trail, a bit of a grunt of a climb initially but not too bad then the trail opens up to go around the inside of a fab red rock structure. Nothing super hard. Great views and a great fun trail.

I would never ride this trail again. It says intermediate but seriously there's way to much creek crossings and very difficult & rocky climbs that seem to go on forever. Granted, I was supposed to be on the section between AZ Cypress & Dry Creek rd. It may be ok on that section but miss a turn and oh boy, super difficult outing.

I would agree with both recent reviews...this trail has some of the best flow on the westside...I started my loop on the newly rerouted Girdner from the culture center trailhead at Yavapi College. It's an epic high intermediate loop. Outer limits going west to east is a flow fun at the top. The lower section has exposure and tight, turns over rocks that require viligence, as it drops into the creek. The climb out of the creek was fairly mellow and a welcome addition to relax a little and flush that adrenaline to get back to the my vehicle and a much deserved IPA under the shade. I'd give it a 4.75/5 rating...overall the loop was a solid 4.5... but the connector trail Rudd from Girdner is a faded, choppy straight two track that should be re-routed. This would make Outer Limits loop damn near perfect...even better than my usual Chuckwagon loop. Great addition to offering another non-insane, blue trail.

Wow! Great trail if u have skills. This more of extreme xc type trail than scary-think-about-dental-work trails like Hiline or other traditional Sedona cool trails. I took this as optional parallel trail to what I was riding. All rideable for the guru.
These western side trails are the best in Sedona. Best xc. They are new and not trails hikers would enjoy either so should stay pristine for a while.

Now is brand new trail, May of 2019. Very nice trail. Very mtb. Really away frin hikers too. Hikers, this is not a great hiking trail. Narrow, twisty and the views are of where Sedona ends. Stick to more scenic hikes. For a bike this hooked with frontier and others in line are the best in Sedona. I do not say this lightly. Hilinw, Hangover, Hog wild and others are unique to Sedona with cool features and must-do rides but these trails on the western edge blow them away. Bench cut cliffs, techy features, deep canyons, well built trails. I add in Frontier and other blacks n loved it. I was going to retide Hangover but will reride this before i leave instead and pick up the other options the next tine.
Prepare for a long loop. 15 miles unless u bail at highway. Advanced riders will be in trail heaven. Go north to sourh but should b mostly rideable both directions.

It’s not well marked and so there are a couple turns you can get off on. It is pretty out there so if you want to be near nobody then it is good for that. A bit techy.

The numerous creek crossing ruin it for me. If they are dry that are very hard to ride due to large smooth rocks, sand, and steep loose climbs out of the creek beds. When wet you may have to wade through them.

Good warm-up/Sedona intro ride if it's your first time here. A little bit of everything: slick rock tech, cornering over loose rock and the infamous Sedona 'dirt'. More intermediate/blue with a few challenging slick rock techy sections.

Good warm-up/Sedona intro ride if it's your first time here. A little bit of everything: slick rock tech, cornering over loose rock and the infamous Sedona 'dirt'. More intermediate/blue with a few challenging slick rock techy sections.

Rocky singletrack but a bit wide. No really challenging corners, just a fast rip with a few small drops and optional obstacles to hop over. Definitely intermediate.

The turn off to this trail to the east from the Western civilization is hard to see and there is no marker. There are two big dead trees and you would go between them. It looks like there used to be a sign and somebody ripped it off.

The rocky section that I see people complaining about is fun as hell and rewards the fitness to ride a few gears down from granny. Riding South to North is the fun rocky climb, then rolling until getting a nice quick descent to Cockscomb. At that point the trail completely changes attitude and becomes a roller coaster of tight natural berms and rollers. I have ridden this each time I've come to Sedona, ofyen in both directions.

Hoo boy, it does seem that overall the Sedona trails are over-rated in terms of difficulty. Almost all are given a single-black rating. Bit of a distortion, IMO, and might turn people off. Sure, a trail like Llama might be single black if you want to clean every foot of it. But an intermediate rider will be able to ride and enjoy most of it, and more importantly won't be freaked out be any of it. Compare that to Highline, which is a seriously difficult trail, with quite a bit of exposure and risk if you want to ride it all. Seems wrong for those two trails to have the same rating.

Agreed. To be sure it's not an easy trail (plenty of little challenges), but I'd call it intermediate, especially for Sedona. It's the first trail I ride when I go there - good, fun warmup for the rest of what Sedona has to offer.
