Trail Cardiac Hill
Contrary to what the earlier comment said, this trail is bike-able and is a good test of cardio. It is a steep climbing trail but not technical at all.

The hardest but most fun part of the Gearjammer route. Contains a few optional drops and plenty of wood features and berms. Super fun and probaly one of the best trails on Burnaby Mountain!

Trail Poplar Trail
This is a trail that connects University Drive to Nicoles. Great little warmup before Nicoles as it leads right in. Contains one drop but its rollable.

Somebody has extra boardwalks and didn’t know what to do with except covering the trail .. and doesn’t seem there is an end to it!

Instead of doing trail maintenance Burnaby have put a big old boardwalk across 1/3 of this trail. Sigh.

I ride this trail all the time! Although it is very easy, it has a few optional lines like skinnies. (only like 1 foot off the ground) there is one roll/ a frame that you can drop. There is a rock on the side of the trail that you can jump. This trail is a great bigginer trail. I would say if you skip all of the optional features, it would be a green. Great trail for an easy warm up.

What he said. Lots of potential, but a super suck ride back up. You can ride it now, just not a lot to it.

Road this the first time, both ways. Bring your legs and lungs if you want to clean the switch backs.

Saw this comment yesterday and it sounded like a challenge! How about climbing it with a loaded mountain cargo bike?

Could be a decent trail but it’s not well maintained and a lot of the ladders etc are broken or in poor condition. It also dumps you out on the TC trail when you have a killer climb back if you’re going that way.

Trail Nicoles
Great trail and a definite step up in difficulty compared to the other trails on the mountain. One of the switchbacks is super sketchy and steep and needs serious commitment to get down, needs some reinforcement or stone work as it’s really eroded. I’ve ridden Blacks on the Shore with much easier switchbacks but guess they are better maintained.

Lots of good corners that don't make it too easy for you while still giving you good support.

Too steep to climb on a mtb. Still a decent connector trail for hikers.

Someone needs to cut out that dangerous handrail they put in. If not I will get to it next week.
[Reply]

Trail Lower Snake
I don't understand, what's the issue with the handrail? it's there for the hikers and to block the braid on the RH side. The Muddbunnies held their beginner ride on LS on Monday, there's lots of pictures of the women riding the wooden ramp and no one seemed to have any issues with the handrail. Please don't make any unauthorized changes to the trail. Thanks.

Trail Nicoles
This is contructive criticism for safer trail building, and by no means have hate against the builder/volunteers
There were some changes this year to the trail, some bad and alot of good. There is a huge flaw with the new drops and I suppose the safety of it. The piece of plywood at the start (first drop) is seriously poorly designed. As you're lead to speed down a trail only to find the lip of the plywood is severely sticking out making a last minute ditch effort to pump your front to get over it and allowing yourself to drop safely. At the bottom of the drop has a huge ditch that has been ruined by Grommies in their DH bikes and is seriously unsafe to land on. A group of my friends have crashed all together going down this section. Along with the new changes and improvements, you guys seriously need to create small burms by the new exposed plywood. If someone hits that, they will be sent off the edge. Please make as much breaking room as possible or create a safe crash enviroment. Exposing sharp wood can seriously injure some new comers to this mountain.
Every other additional changes like the bridges and walkways have been very good! But this trail will seriously hinder any new Black Diamonder's to help support this mountain as means of learning this trail.
PS: The bottom of this trail is very fun

Trail Nicoles
Hi, and thanks for your comments. We actually don't build drops, the City of Burnaby does not approve of them as there are liability issues. If however riders choose to drop off rocks or bridges that is their decision and they accept the consequences. I believe the section you are referring to is actually meant to direct riders to the right around a tree. We chose not to block off the gully and allow riders to make their own decision as to whether to attempt to drop or ride the trail as intended. We do create berms where possible but as all of the trails are used by both hikers and bikers adding in a slew of berms is not always feasible.
We welcome your input and would invite you to attend one of our trail days where you can discuss your ideas.
Glad you like the trailwork. Enjoy the ride.

First time riding both Poplar and Nicole's trails last July 22, 2017, so stoked, I never taught this is a black diamond trail and rode it with only a road helmet for protection, so good to ride this at SFU. I'm from Alberta and located this trail on my own. BTW this trail destroyed my GoPro Mount due to constant shaking and impacts on drops.

Offers a nice climb up to SFU if you're heading east from Hastings. You'll get a pretty good cardio workout and strengthen your muscles. Trail offers 3 rest stops on the way up and you can use them as benchmarks to push yourself to do the whole climb in one go. Centennial Way marks the halfway point going up, but I find the climb much easier after that point. Once you're at the top, it's a fairly easy ride towards Cardio Hill, Mel's trail, or Powerline trail.
Going down is pretty fun as you can pick up some serious velocity, but be prepared to melt your brakes.
