Aug 8, 2026 @ 5:17pm (America/Anchorage) Aug 8, 2026 | mtb 1.5mi in from north end is good, then it gets very overgrown. | Variable | view
Sep 1, 2025 @ 11:26am Sep 1, 2025 | mtb Trail was dry and conditions great. Only downside: 1/4 of trail is completely overgrown, still rideable but slows you down a good bit. Especially on the plateau around Johnson pass. | Ideal | view
Jun 25, 2025 @ 2:53pm Jun 25, 2025 | mtb North to south June 18th and 19th. Two creeks flooded near the lakes, 2 or 3 big fallen trees to climb over, lots of mosquitos, not much overgrowth, mostly open, nice trail!
| Ideal | view
Jun 25, 2025 @ 2:47pm Jun 25, 2025 | mtb North to south June 18th. Two flooded creeks, 2 or 3 trees to climb over, lots of mosquitos, mostly open trail (not grown in) very clean, fun ride | Ideal | view
Jun 13, 2025 @ 10:48pm Jun 13, 2025 | mtb Running great. Some flooding around Johnson lake | Ideal | view
Aug 24, 2024 @ 11:48am Aug 24, 2024 | mtb has been cleared and brushed to far side of bench lake on the north side of trail. couple of mud hoes ,overall in good shape | Variable | view
Jul 27, 2024 @ 2:07am Jul 27, 2024 | mtb The overgrowth is brutal. The first two miles on the north end have been clear but the rest is 4-6feet tall. Can see the trail or you bike at times. Avoid riding here until is is fully mowed or it’s the fall. | Variable | view
Jul 24, 2023 @ 3:25am Jul 24, 2023 | mtb Way, way, way overgrown. Large portions of the trail are not able to be seen due to huge amounts of Cow Parsnip and some Devils Club. Do not attempt without pants, gloves, and eye protection. Long sleeves would be nice. Beautiful country but I wouldn’t do it again this late in the season. | Ideal | view
Jun 24, 2023 @ 4:11am Jun 24, 2023 | mtb Mud spots and water crossings but all rideable. Pants suggested to fend off salmon berry whips and pushki. | Variable | view
Sep 18, 2022 @ 1:33pm Sep 18, 2022 | mtb Overall very rideable with several short and longer sections of mud. Medium level overgrown. | Wet | view
Aug 6, 2022 @ 10:36am Aug 6, 2022 | mtb From the south entrance, first 10 miles are in great shape. Once you begin climbing into the pass, the trail becomes very overgrown. Chest high grasses, devil's club, cow parsnip, and raspberry. Mostly still rideable, but you can't see your own front wheel because of the vegetation. | Variable | view
Jun 11, 2022 @ 11:58am Jun 11, 2022 | mtb Actually, much better than we had expected. South side is quite dry, but pushki and other plants are begining to encroach. As we neared the lakes, the amount of going around overgrown bushes on the trail and over ones that had fallen was prevalent and difficult. Many swacks as you pass by them. Bugs were moderately nasty. Coming along the north lake, more of the same bushes and swacking. In a few places the trail and streams merged, but it was rideable. Signs of bear scat, but no sightings. | Variable | view
Jul 1, 2021 @ 12:18pm Jul 1, 2021 | mtb Biked this north to south on a sunny day, 6/30/21. The snow has all melted out and the trail was in good condition. There were two creeks that needed jumping with handing bikes across, and one large downed tree to jump over. The trail was starting to get overgrown and got some burning on our shins and hands from the cow parsnip, so would recommend gloves and pants or shin guards. The bugs were moderate, but more flies than mosquitoes. It was about 23 miles on our gaia, garmin and strava tracking. | Ideal | view
Jun 19, 2021 @ 11:20am Jun 19, 2021 | mtb South 4 miles getting shaggy with cow parsnip; a few small muddy spots here and there; a trio of wet areas and 2 creeks to cross (jumpable but not on bike). In general running great! | Ideal | view
Oct 22, 2020 @ 10:14pm Oct 22, 2020 | mtb Did it with the Kids over the weekend, Trail was in mostly good shape, some frozen ruts here and there, but nothing too bad. A few trees across the trail near the south trailhead. | Freeze/thaw Cycle | view
Sep 24, 2020 @ 10:39am Sep 24, 2020 | mtb Slippery rocks and huge mud puddles made this tricky on the uphill (we went from north trailhead to Johnson pass lake at mile 9.5 and then back to north trailhead), but fun on the downhill back out. Trail was not too overgrown and the fall leaves are gorgeous right now. Though I would recommend long pants to avoid getting scratched up by the underbrush. | Wet | view
Jun 21, 2020 @ 10:44am Jun 21, 2020 | mtb One washed-out bridge that requires a bike toss and leap. No snow. North side of the trail in great condition, with the Moose Pass side much more wet and slippery. Higher altitudes were great, fast riding. Lower altitudes were a bit slower as you have to battle the handle-bar height shrubs. | Variable | view
Jun 8, 2020 @ 12:10pm Jun 8, 2020 | mtb | Ideal | view
May 29, 2020 @ 7:58pm May 29, 2020 | mtb Excellent conditions the whole trail long. One 20' patch of snow to cross on the North side and maybe 3 downed trees to lift your bike over, none in any dangerous spots. A few muddy patches, but reasonable for Johnson Pass. Lots of people getting after it out there! | Dry | view
Apr 12, 2020 @ 7:56pm Apr 12, 2020 | mtb Conditions are mostly winter, variable, and we have entered the Freeze-Thaw cycle. We are now only three days past when a snow machine could get past larger obstacles. That doesn't mean there's a lack of snow. The North half of the pass still has an average of 20" of snow... Less than the South half. Snow shoes needed for much of the second half. A few fat bikes made it about seven miles in.. must have been early in the AM! Only One set of bear tracks-no scat, so perhaps they will sleep one more week. Be prepared though. Wolverines were present and kept to themselves. Did this in one short day 4 hours - backpacking to camp at mile 7.2 and one long day 12 hours 16 miles- snowshoeing. Will return to the pass to bike it in early June. The pics and description of the route do not give enough credit to the beauty of the journey. | Snow Covered | view
Oct 26, 2019 @ 1:08pm Oct 26, 2019 | mtb Warm 40 degrees wet in areas and the usual water crossings. Leaves covering trail in areas. Overgrowth mostly down up high.. | Wet | view
Sep 30, 2019 @ 4:23pm Sep 30, 2019 | mtb Still very brushy up high and on the north side of the pass. South side was good up until the tree line around mile 9 or so from the south trailhead. Everything passable, but wouldnt recommend just yet unless you’re up for an adventure with a lot of brush slaps to the face and arms. | Wet | view
Jul 3, 2019 @ 8:14pm Jul 3, 2019 | mtb Overall great conditions. Overgrowth preventing seeing the trail on less than 10% of the trail. One downed tree, 0 snow, quite a bit of pushki slapped us, insects were moderate. Smokey from Swan Fire. | Dry | view
Jun 11, 2019 @ 1:13pm Jun 11, 2019 | mtb A few trees down on south side, veg knee height to not growing yet up high, no snow. Should be good through late June with deteriorating visibility from Veg as time goes on | Variable | view |
