Makairo Track Details
This track follows a road that was closed in the 1970's. Since then it has turned into bush and can be overgrown in places. It passes through the Waewaepa Department of Conservation scenic reserve.
Great view from the top.
This is a very exposed track with steep drops off the side and should not be attempted in adverse weather. On a good day it is a great ride, nearly always muddy winter or summer, reasonably technical and overgrown 4WD track but worth the trip with great views to reward your efforts.
Always take a windproof jacket and long trousers and tops recommended because of a bit of stinging nettle on route. It is possible to ride right through to the other end with transport required to drive out to Dannevirke; however it is not as ride able down the other side.
It is an out and back ride and can be accessed from either end. The recommended direction is from the Kohinui end which is up first, downhill back.
To get to the start, drive to Mangatainoka on SH2 north of Pahiatua. Turn at the Tui Brewery into Kohinui Rd, left into Waituna Rd and right into Makairo Rd. Drive to the end of the gravel and park.
