The Moerangi Mountain Bike Track is a dual purpose track which attracts both mountain bikers and
trampers. The track is an intermediate grade biking track (Grade 3) designed to attract people of all skill
levels. The track does have sustained hill sections and therefore requires a medium/high level of fitness.
Situated along the track are three huts, Skips, Rogers and Moerangi. All three spots are a great place to
have a rest and let others catch up. They also pose the opportunity to turn this demanding ride into an
overnight adventure.

The best direction to ride is from Okahu Road end to River Road car park as you'll have less uphill and get to finish with a long downhill. Be cautious of other track users though!

Access Info

The track is 95km's southwest of Rotorua along State Highway 5 and then 38, on the way to Lake Waikaremoana. The best option for transport is to park the car at Whirinaki Forest Holidays and have them drive your car to and from the road ends which are 37km's apart.

Alternatively, drive/ride 30km's east from Minginui village to the end of Okahu Rd. NB: Okahu Rd is a narrow gravel road.

Rode this track yesterday on Levo Expert ebike. 4 hours riding. Was hardly muddy - had 4 dry days leading up to ride-day. Some snappy steep climbs which were too damp to ride so had to push. Still a couple of BIG trees across the trail and definitely needed help to get my bike over them. This is a trail I will definitely be doing again.... even in the winter. Has to be the best bush anywhere.

A great ride in some stunning forest with some challenging climbs and great downhills. A few fallen trees but are easy to get around. Our ride time 4.5 hrs. Overall time 6.5hrs with stops.

Beautiful forest but a bit boring machine groomed trail. The erosion makes it more interesting in some places but I would prefer the original roots and rocks

Track in generally great condition. Awesome downhills and beautiful forest. A few grunty climbs, but plenty of opportunity to rest up.

First 10k and a little after skippers hut is still out of action and takes a fair bit of bush bashing bike throwing to get past. Great riding from Rogers hut.
