Ivan Eek, farm manager at Hooggekraal contacted the Tygerberg MTB club early in 2012 regarding development of trails on this farm. The club and Ivan approached Bennet of Ace of Spaces trail building set to set out an 8.5km trail through indigenous renosterveld and farmland. The trail starts at 46m above sea level offering a gentle warm up along jeep track before swinging right, over a bridge and into sweeping singletrack. Riders soon enter “Beware Alley” which got it’s name from all the wildlife that was encountered when the trail was built through this narrow donga (scorpions, snakes, porcupine and supersize earthworms). The trail here is mildly technical before hitting the main climb, “Spykers Hill”. The climb to the highest point of 226m over approximately 4km is interspersed with bends and switchbacks which keep the ride interesting and unpredictable. There is a false summit as you exit the renosterveld so save some legs for the last push to the top alongside the fence.
