Coming from the north end, it's a moderate descent to the river. The trail along the river is pretty tough with some walking sections. The south end climb would be very tough with a lot of walking. Riding down that way is not a picnic either with tight steep switchbacks next to the river and super rocky sections above.
Going out and back on the north side of the loop might be the best option.
