If you follow the official trail and aren't going to bushwhack along the creek that runs under Balboa Ave, you will need to follow the street up to the stoplight to cross. Rather than backtracking along the road to where the creek is, you can find this trail entrance much closer. The path is a fairly steep double track with some washout, that is otherwise very smooth.

Access Info

From the stoplight on Balboa Ave you will head towards the canyon past Starbucks and a small strip mall. Make a right on the road behind the strip mall just before the "Tecolote Canyon Natural Park - Hiking (Golf)" sign. About 50 feet up that side street you will see another Tecolote Canyon sign and the trail entrance on your right. It connects to the Tecolote Canyon DH trail about 500 feet from the Balboa Ave entrance.
