SaveSteyning is a pleasant little market town just under the South Downs northern escarpment. Most of the trails are open downland dual track, mostly of hard pack chalk and flint, but with some loose material overlain in places. Grip is generally excellent in dry conditions, but can be treacherously slippery when damp or wet. Trails on the top or southern escarpment tend to be open, and dry out quickly in warm conditions. Trails on the northern escarpment tend to be wooded, steep, narrow and technical, and do not dry very quickly even in summer. The worst aspect is the roots; not too bad when dry, but guaranteed to have you sliding off downhill when damp.
Steyning has some nice pubs serving good beer and food. Whites' tends to be pricey, but there's plenty of outdoor seating. The Chequers keeps their beer well and has a nice selection, with good value food. The Star is known for food and outdoor seating, and the Norfolk Arms is the locals' pub.
There are plenty of car parks in the town within easy ride of the best access climbs.
