Kenyon Devore Trail descends directly from the AV Loop intersection on the summit of Mount Wilson, on the north side of the road. There is a sign clearly marking the start. Within 100m a connector trail branches right, contouring east to Rim Trail and the Mt Wilson trailhead parking/Cosmic Cafe. Kenyon Devore Trail continues down at this fork. Easy switchbacks lead into a sequence of rock steps/obstacles. Exposure slowly ramps up, but the riding is only moderately technical. Some more difficult rock gardens are encountered, and some scary cliff-hanging across rock outcrops. Highligh: a ridgeline run with mixed forest/desert veg, and creeks flowing along both sides.
Riding is varied, with duff, leaves, acorns, sand/gravel, rocks/slabs, permanent hero, and some creek crossings. On approach to the lower end of the trail, where it connects with the Gabrielino Trail, the path wanders down the canyon bottom through a swath of burned oak trees; this section often has the most deadfall if the trail has not been cleared by the sawyers.
This is a good route for fall color There are some huge maple trees in a couple sections, with willow, squaw bush, blackberry also adding their hues.
A Peak Experience : For Kenyon DeVore, His Life and Love Is the Mountains
Note for W-bound Gabrielino Trail: This junction is now harder to spot, since the sign and the stand of trees have burned. There is a large white slab adjacent the trail, on descender's left, water of the creek falling there. The Gabrielino Trail is in the bushes about 20m/60ft before this slab, and makes an immediate bend backward to descend the bank. There was flagging on the bush here, but has since disappeared.
