Not a black diamond. Blue. However, there is a section toward the latter part that is black, due to the amount of ascending. There are three ascents in a row that get the heart rate up, the last of which is the most difficult as you’re already tired and it’s the steepest with crushed gravel. (Carlin trail curmudgeons will note how much easier this section is than it used to be.) So now you’re panting pretty hard when all of a sudden you hit a section that more technical AND includes some climbing. The roots may get you if the rocks and your heart rate don’t.

Bottom line: this is the hardest section of trail at Carlin (or Muir) and is black diamond due to the aerobic challenge. Length on the green trail might be 1.5 to 2 miles?
