The trail begins in the Keenes Horse Camp and provides access to Spring Creek Trail #115, High Lakes Trail #116, and Horseshoe Lake. Horses and mules now share the heavily used route with hikers and bicycles as they pass through semi-open forests and meadows.

Keenes Trail and the nearby horse camp were named after Keenes Meade, a Forest Service mule packer. Features include 24-acre Horseshoe Lake, which is 1.2 miles from the horse camp. Trail #120A provides a direct route from Keenes Horse Camp to Green Mountain Trail #110.
