R2 starts a few metres north of the end of R1. This hand-built trail climbs and descends a few times as it weaves its way around the hillside. Plenty of roots and some berms as well. The section of Tom Snow that parallels it is much shorter but features a steep &#$*ing hill and a boggy meadow. At the north end, R2 meets Tom Snow just before the bridge over Ranger creek. Turn left, cross the bridge and after 100m you'll reach the junction with Bobcat. Keep left and continue up the hill for another 250m to reach the start of R3 on the right.

Ridgeback is one of the trails in Kananaskis built and maintained by the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance. It's a mix of machine-built and hand-built construction, designed to provide an alternative to the perpetual wetness of the Tom Snow trail.

Ridgeback and Tom Snow come together at three points, dividing both trails into four main sections, all of which are good in either direction. You can mix and match sections of the two trails to extend or shorten your ride. Note that the parts of Tom Snow that Ridgeback bypasses almost always have standing water, mud puddles and downed trees across them.

Wow, have some love for a classic handbuilt cross country trail. I don’t usually comment, but had to given the negative reviews on this one. All of the Ridgebacks are challenging trails with roots and rocks, punchy climbs, and some tight spots between trees. They are not meant to be flow trails, but if you ride them often, you will find some flow. Over the years they have been given ‘lots of love by CMBA, and are one of the few trails in the area that use boardwalks to avoid swampy areas. It’s a solid blue cross country mountain bike trail; you should ride it.

I’d have to agree that for being what’s supposed to be a mountain bike trail, it’s the worst trail in the area. CMBA has not given much love to this trail over the years. More exposed off camber roots than ever. However it is a necessary evil coming down bobcat, so what you do?

Use caution after a rain, or you’ll end up in the trees like I did. If you’re an XC diehard with some decent tech skills you’ll like it. Otherwise, you’ll hate it.

I find this trail very technical and very delightful perfect trail to develop my skills and lots of fun
