Stony Run starts just north of Brushy Hollow off of Douthat Road. The climb up to Middle Mountain is one of the biggest in the park.

The grade is not steep at first but after the first trail intersection, the trail begins to ramp up. Stay straight at the next intersection with a horse sign and begin the real climbing. From here to the turnoff for Tuscarora Overlook you’ll experience several switchbacks through mature forest.

The best views of the park are available from the cabin at Tuscarora Overlook, the out-and-back should not be missed.

From the overlook, the last bit of the trail climbs through a boulder field to the ridge, intersecting with Middle Mountain.

Lots of fun going down. The trees are a pain and you have to not care about constant leaves and branches smacking your arms and face.
