STEEP! You will have to push your bike up a 25 degree incline out of basin camp. Also, most of the trail from the lake up to basin camp is a push as well. Furthermore, the trail is hard to find going around the lake. When you get to the campsite on the Northeast side of the lake, the one that has an American Flag up in a tree, keep going over the log. The trail routes right down along the lakeshore and eventually starts climbing the hill. This trail has been poached by a dirt bike rider who caused some severe damage. There are ruts everywhere from the lake up to the intersection with Craggy peak and they make the trail difficult to manage at times.

Rutted out by motos. Severely degraded in some places with ruts about 3 feet deep. The ride is amazing and the forest is in great shape. Probably some great views, but it was smoky. There are grades that you would be able to pedal up but you'll have to push the bike because of the severe rutting from the motos.

Rode Hamilton Buttes on 9/3. Trail is very dry and dusty from the motorized traffic. Still a super fun ride if you are comfortable with the moon dust. FR 78 is washed out just above cat creek camp ground. You can still shuttle the trail on the 7807 athough a high clearance vehicle is needed.

reporter High Lakes trail runs like a slightly sandy trail you’d ride in Bend, only the flora is a lush green oasis in the desert. The trail itself is a mixed use trail and benefits from the trail motorcycles often used on the trail. The corners are Bermed, the trail is minorly technical and undulates in longer sections. It’s a must ride trail in the area!

reporter Fantastic. Wet and tacky. Some muddy sections but not bad at all. The moto berms are ridiculous fun. The rut does need some knocking down, but that would require a pretty extensive trail crew to get it done.

Been hearing about this trail for years and finally did an out and back from the east trailhead. What a gem! True alpine ridge singletrack. No maintenance has been done in years. Many trees down and lots of areas that need brushed out. But, what we could ride was duffy, hero dirt, covered in pine needles. Where else can you ride in mid-august and find a trail that isn't all blown out? Nobody uses this trail. Hiker's head into the nearby Goats Rocks or Berry Patch wilderness and this trail is closed to OHV/Moto. This is the perfect trail for Evergreen Mountain Bike to adopt and recover. Very close to the town of Randle and Packwood with vehicle access on each end for shuttles. A number of forest roads also come close to the trail in the middle section where you could then gain access for maintenance. The forest service is never going to touch this thing. It's not a popular hiking trail. During our little out and back we were able to remove a number of downed trees, but an organized effort is needed. Ride this trail! Send emails to the Evergreen mountain bike chapter in Packwood and let them know to get on this thing. Host an Enduro event on it and this could be one of the top singletrack rides on the Hwy. 12 corridor. Over 19 miles of pristine, unused singletrack sits there just for mountain bike use! The east end can even be extended onto trail #7A all the way down to Forrest Road 21.

This trail is a deeply rutted in some parts from motos (12 inches) and is loose and dry in other parts. Honestly it was not fun to ride down, I only went down it because it saved me from climbing(read, pushing my bike) another 2-3k more feet and I was starting to run out of daylight and energy. There is absolutely no way this trail can be climbed. At the bottom of the trail the road is washed out in four different places (see photos)

It’s a steep and narrow moto trail that’s pretty much unridable uphill. I had to push my bike from behind since there was too much brush along the trail. The views are nice though and the lookout trail is fairly short. When going northbound take the lower trail and then go back to reach the lookout. I think it’s and easier option. But don’t have any illusions you are pushing either way.

reporter There are some mud puddles in the moto woops, but otherwise the sandy dirt is super tacky because it's rained recently. Trail is a total blast because of the moto berms. You definitely want to ride this trail before the snow flies. I'm very jealous of the Trans Cascadia participants who are racing it this coming weekend.
