Round Mountain is typically ridden as a complete loop with Lookout Mountain Trail, by either riding 7 miles of pavement from the bottom of Lookout, or shuttling to the start of Round Mountain Trail. Either option makes for a long, strenuous day out. Do not be deceived by the relatively short distances, you will earn your beers.
Round Mountain Trail immediately begins climbing steadily through the forest before opening into a steep open area below the summit. Ten or so arduous switchbacks will get you to the Round Mountain summit where you have amazing views east and west across to Lookout Mountain. After enjoying the summit, ride a short ways down the gravel road and look for the trail heading off to the right where the road switchbacks. Enjoy a fantastic descent and one steep climb before the trail crosses NF-42 and climbs 1/4 mile to join the Lookout Mountain Trail. If you have had enough you can easily bail here and take NF-42 back down to the bottom of Lookout Mountain.
Begin either from the bottom of Lookout Mountain Trail on Ochoco Ranger Road and ride 7 miles of pavement to the Round Mountain Trailhead to make a complete loop with Lookout Mountain Trail; or shuttle to the Round Mountain Trailhead on NF-22.
The trailhead can be found by following signs to Walton Lake and turning right on a dirt access road just beyond the Walton Lake CG. The Round Mountain trailhead is signposted.
