This track is OPEN to riding (see http://www.gw.govt.nz/assets/Parks-and-Recreation/Misc/East-Harbour-mountain-bike-map.pdf) and for walkers it provides an alternative exit from Rata Ridge.

The upper part of the track is more like a fire break. As you descend, the track gets narrower, ending with a very steep gravel path consisting of several zigzags - which give the track its name.

Access Info

If descending Rata Ridge, then you'll encounter a T-intersection about three quarters of the way down. The Zigzag track is clearly marked where it heads off to the left.
